Sebbene il Profibus fu inizialmente standardizzato alla fine degli anni '80, non è facile trovare materiali che aiutino gli ingegneri di sistema e di progetto nello sviluppo di nuovi prodotti. Oggigiorno Profibus sembra essere ancora un dominio di applicazioni professionali e soluzioni commerciali. La ragione principale si basa sul prezzo elevato di tutti i prodotti Profibus, sia hardware che software.
Il progetto PBMaster entra con la propria soluzione nel campo di applicazione di questo popolare bus industriale. La chiave per raggiungere questi obiettivi è l'utilizzo di hardware comuni e poco costosi e software open source. Attualmente il software è eseguibile su molteplici sistemi operativi (Linux, FreeBSD e NetBSD) e hardware sys-less embedded basato su architettura ARM. L'intento è quello di offrire driver multipiattaforma, librerie e applicazioni in grado di eseguire le funzioni di master, slave e analizzatore, del Profibus DP. In futuro il progetto proverà ad offrire una soluzione complessa e poco costosa con open code per le applicazioni che utilizzano Profibus DP. I componenti del progetto sono realizzati sotto licenza GNU General Public License v.2 o versioni successive.

Tomorrow begins the Embedded World 2009 in Nurnberg where PBMaster will be presented at the booth of the OSADL company and the Czech Technical University in Prague. Many new features (Analyzer, Slave, ARM port, ..) have been implemented in the last months. The new version is expected to be released at the beginning of April.

Support for Atmel AT91 USART since version 0.4.0. (supports all speeds up to 12 Mbit/s). This is probably the smallest Profibus Master in the world supporting all Profibus speeds.
